Using her own strength, Song Xixi protected the people for her brothers who had died in battle. To ease her mother's worries, she vowed to her mother to conceal her military merits and stop slaying enemies as a general. She married the good son-in-law, Zhan Bei Wang, chosen by her mother, and thus became the mistress of the inner house. On the night of her wedding, Zhan Bei Wang went to war. For a year, Song Xixi served her in-laws and used her dowry to support the general's mansion. However, the first thing Zhan Bei Wang did upon his triumphant return was to force Song Xixi to admit that he married her for military merits and wanted to marry another woman to be her equal. Seeing Zhan Bei Wang break his promise of never taking a concubine, Song Xixi turned around, entered the palace, and requested a royal decree for divorce.
